Yerevan is exploring a strategic initiative to establish forest belts, primarily in its southwestern regions, to combat air pollution, particularly during the winter months. This plan, which may extend beyond the city’s administrative boundaries, was unveiled by Armen Begoyan, director of the “Greening and Environmental Protection” CNCO, at a press conference held today, December 22.
Addressing Air Quality Challenges in Yerevan
Begoyan highlighted that the prevailing winds in Yerevan are predominantly from the southwest. Therefore, focusing on this specific area for greening efforts is crucial for enhancing the city’s air quality. The director emphasized the importance of these measures in conjunction with other factors contributing to pollution, such as vehicle emissions.
Collaborative Approach for Greener Areas
The proposal involves potential discussions with regional governors and the Ministry to include areas adjacent to Yerevan as part of these green zones. This collaborative approach aims to create a more comprehensive network of green spaces that can effectively mitigate air pollution.
Begoyan noted, “This issue may also be discussed with governors or the Ministry to include areas near Yerevan as green zones.”
Winter Air Quality vs. Warmer Months
The director pointed out a significant disparity in air quality between the seasons. “Of course, these are solutions. Of course, along with vehicle emissions and various other factors, these are also the factors that need to improve Yerevan’s air quality during the winter season, because mainly in the vegetative parts during the warm seasons of the year, the air quality is good or even excellent,” Begoyan stated.
This observation underscores the urgency of implementing measures that specifically target the challenges posed by winter conditions, when air quality tends to deteriorate.
Long-Term Environmental Strategy
The establishment of forest belts is part of a broader, long-term environmental strategy aimed at creating a healthier urban environment for Yerevan’s residents. By focusing on natural solutions like tree planting, the city hopes to achieve sustainable improvements in air quality and overall ecological balance.
The initiative reflects a growing commitment to environmental protection and sustainable urban development within the Armenian capital. Further details regarding the implementation timeline and specific locations for the forest belts are expected to emerge following the proposed discussions with relevant stakeholders.
