Yerevan, January 26 – Robert Nazaryan, a prominent statesman who served as the Mayor of Yerevan and former Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC), has passed away at the age of 70.
A Distinguished Career in Armenian Public Service
Nazaryan’s professional journey left a significant mark on the development of Armenia’s energy and administrative systems. His career spanned from serving as Deputy Minister of Energy in the late 1990s to leading the capital city and a key regulatory body.
He held the position of Yerevan Mayor from 2001 to 2003. Following his tenure as mayor, he was appointed Chairman of the PSRC, a role to which he was re-elected in both 2008 and 2013, highlighting his sustained influence and trust within the regulatory sector.
Recent Legal Scrutiny and Legacy
In recent years, Nazaryan’s activities had drawn the attention of law enforcement agencies. In 2023, the RA Prosecutor General’s Office filed a lawsuit demanding the confiscation of property from Nazaryan and his wife, alleged to be of illicit origin, in favor of the state.
Despite these legal challenges, his long-standing contributions to public service, particularly in the energy sector and urban administration, are widely acknowledged.
Funeral Arrangements
The memorial service for the former mayor will take place tomorrow, January 27, at 6:00 PM at St. Hovhannes Church in Kond.
