YEREVAN, March 13 – The Armenian Rescue Service reports that most roads across the republic are currently passable. However, specific routes have ongoing restrictions, particularly for certain types of vehicles.
Current Road Closures and Restrictions
The high-mountain meteorological station “Amberd” in the Aragatsotn Province has reported that roads leading to the Amberd Fortress and Lake Kari are currently closed. These closures are typical for the season due to high-altitude weather conditions.
Restrictions for Articulated Vehicles
Several key routes are closed to articulated vehicles (those with trailers). These include:
- Chambarak-Berd (with icy patches reported in some sections)
- Gyumri-Ashotsk
- Ltsen-Tatev
- Kapan-Sisian
Drivers operating articulated vehicles on these routes are advised to seek alternative paths or wait for conditions to improve. The Rescue Service strongly recommends that all drivers use winter tires when traveling on Armenian roads, particularly given the current weather conditions and potential for icy patches.
Stepanstminda-Lars Highway Status
According to information received from the Emergency Situations Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and the Crisis Management Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in North Ossetia, the Stepanstminda-Lars highway is open to all types of vehicles. This is a critical transit route, and its full accessibility is important for both passenger and cargo transport between Armenia and Russia.
Weather Forecast and Safety Warnings
The latest weather forecast for March 13 predicts snowfall and blizzards, which could further impact road conditions. The public is advised to exercise caution, monitor official announcements, and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in mountainous regions. The Rescue Service has also issued a warning regarding an increase in telephone fraud cases, urging citizens to be vigilant.
Government Initiatives for Road Standards
In related news, the Armenian government aims to implement road standards that comply with EU norms. This initiative was discussed during a meeting between the Prime Minister and the EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, highlighting Armenia’s commitment to improving infrastructure and aligning with European standards.
