Yerevan Doctor Accused of Aiding Illegal Kidney Sale for $40,000-$60,000: An Investigative Report
Yerevan, Armenia – A shocking case of alleged illegal organ trafficking has come to light in Yerevan, where a doctor from a prominent medical center stands accused of facilitating the illicit sale of a relative’s kidney. The pre-trial investigation, conducted by the General Department for Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the Investigative Committee of Armenia, has concluded, shedding light on a disturbing scheme that aimed to capitalize on human organs for profit.
The Allegations: A Doctor’s Complicity in Organ Trafficking
According to the Investigative Committee of Armenia, Dr. A.S., a physician at the “Armenia” Medical Center, is alleged to have assisted her relative, G.S., in the illegal sale of a kidney for a sum ranging from 40,000 to 60,000 US dollars. This alleged collaboration took place between November 2022 and May 2023.
The investigation revealed that G.S., intending to sell one of his kidneys, approached Dr. A.S. for assistance. Numerous phone conversations reportedly took place between the two, during which they discussed finding a buyer for the kidney and the financial terms of the sale, specifically the 40,000-60,000 USD price range.
The Unraveling of the Scheme: A Change of Heart and an Unknowing Recipient
The plot thickened when Dr. A.S., aware of T.T.’s need for a kidney transplant due to health issues, allegedly passed T.T.’s contact information to G.S. The intention was for G.S. to contact T.T. and reach an agreement for the illegal sale of his kidney.
However, the scheme did not proceed as planned. Upon observing T.T.’s deteriorating health, G.S. reportedly had a change of heart. Realizing that selling his kidney could similarly worsen his own health, G.S. ultimately refused to proceed with the sale. Crucially, T.T. remained unaware that G.S. intended to demand a specific sum of money for his kidney.
Legal Ramifications: Charges Filed and the Path Forward
As a result of these findings, Dr. A.S. of the “Armenia” Medical Center has been charged with public criminal prosecution under Article 43-183, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. This article pertains to aiding in the illegal trafficking of human embryos, fetuses, human or cadaveric cells, tissues, organs, or biological materials or fluids.
The criminal case, along with the indictment, has been forwarded to the supervising prosecutor. It is important to note that, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code, an individual accused of a crime is presumed innocent until their guilt is proven by a court verdict that has entered into legal force.
The Broader Implications: A Shadowy World of Organ Trafficking
This case, while ultimately not resulting in an actual organ transplant, highlights the persistent issue of illegal organ trafficking. Such schemes exploit vulnerable individuals and undermine ethical medical practices. The involvement of a medical professional in such an alleged plot raises serious concerns about the integrity of the healthcare system and the need for stringent oversight.
The investigation’s conclusion marks a significant step in addressing this alleged crime. The outcome of the judicial process will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for future cases involving organ trafficking in Armenia.
