Nine Armenian Citizens Repatriated from Iraq Amidst Regional Tensions
YEREVAN, March 22 – Nine Armenian citizens have successfully returned to Armenia from Iraq, following increased tensions in the Middle East. The repatriation process, which took place on March 17-18, was facilitated by the Armenian Embassy in Iraq.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, since February 28, a total of 12 Armenian citizens, all contract workers in various fields, had contacted the Armenian Embassy in Iraq expressing their desire to return home. Of these, nine opted to be repatriated.
Embassy’s Role in Repatriation
The Armenian Embassy in Iraq played a crucial role in coordinating the complex return journey. The route taken by the repatriated citizens was Baghdad-Kuwait-Riyadh-Tbilisi-Yerevan. Ambassador Ruben Soghoian of Armenia to Iraq personally accompanied the group to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Further assistance was provided by the Armenian Embassies in Kuwait and Iraq, which helped the citizens obtain Saudi Arabian entry visas and ensured free and escorted ground transportation. This multi-country effort highlights the diplomatic coordination involved in ensuring the safety and return of Armenian nationals.
Remaining Citizens in Iraq
Three Armenian citizens remain in Iraq. Two of them have contractual obligations that prevent their immediate departure, while the third citizen has expressed a preference to wait before returning to Armenia. The embassies continue to monitor their situation and remain in contact to provide any necessary assistance.
The Armenian government emphasizes its commitment to supporting its citizens abroad, especially in regions experiencing instability. This successful repatriation underscores the effectiveness of diplomatic efforts in protecting and assisting Armenian nationals during times of crisis.
