YEREVAN, Armenia – Mesrop Arakelyan, co-founder of the ‘Country to Live’ party, has issued a scathing critique of Yerevan’s urban governance, asserting that the authorities, having effectively failed in city management, are now undertaking dangerous experiments in the name of ‘reforms’ at the expense of citizens’ nerves and health.
Arakelyan: Transportation in Yerevan an ‘Adventure’
In a Facebook post, Arakelyan highlighted several critical issues plaguing the city’s infrastructure and public services. He specifically pointed to the illogical and dangerous practice of forcing public transport drivers into a ‘controller’ role amidst potholed roads and non-functional drainage systems after rains.
“Distraction while driving increases the likelihood of errors and accidents. Moreover, a situation has been created where anyone can get into a scuffle, even due to an insignificant conversation. Driving and commuting by public transport in Yerevan has turned into a real adventure,” Arakelyan stated.
Systemic Failures and Superficial Changes
Arakelyan emphasized that effective urban governance requires responsibility and systemic improvement, not superficial changes that create more problems than they solve. He argued that the current approach is detrimental to the well-being of Yerevan’s residents.
“Our citizens deserve a safe, comfortable, and predictable environment, not to become victims of the failed ‘brainwaves’ of the responsible authorities,” he added, underscoring the need for fundamental changes in how the city is managed.
