Gyumri, May 27, 2026 – The court has decided to re-arrest Spartak Ghukasyan, the son of Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, for a period of three months. This development was reported by Armenian media, citing the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia.
Re-arrest on Hooliganism Charges
The Prosecutor General’s Office confirmed that Spartak Ghukasyan was arrested under an article relating to hooliganism, though no further details were provided regarding the specific incident leading to this re-arrest. This is not the first time Ghukasyan has faced legal issues.
Previous Arrests and Legal Proceedings
Ghukasyan’s lawyer, Hovhannes Gharakeshishyan, informed Armenian media that the court session regarding the re-arrest took place without the participation of the defense. Gharakeshishyan highlighted that the question of a preventive measure for the Gyumri mayor’s son was supposed to be considered only two months later, raising concerns about the procedural aspects of the re-arrest.
Spartak Ghukasyan was initially arrested on November 20, 2025. The Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia initiated public criminal proceedings against him under Article 297, Part 2, Clauses 1 and 3 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, which pertains to hooliganism committed by a group of persons using information or communication technologies. On November 21, the Anti-Corruption Court of the Republic of Armenia granted the Investigative Committee’s motion for his arrest.
Change of Custody and Subsequent Re-arrest
However, in April 2026, the preventive measure for Spartak Ghukasyan was changed to house arrest. Prior to this, Ghukasyan had also been placed under house arrest on charges of extortion committed through coercion. The current re-arrest for three months signifies a renewed period of detention for the mayor’s son, bringing his legal battles back into the spotlight in Gyumri and the wider Shirak Province.
The ongoing legal saga surrounding Spartak Ghukasyan continues to attract significant public and media attention in Armenia, particularly given his father’s prominent position as the Mayor of Gyumri.
