The Origin Story

Why So Armenia began during the pandemic when Ani Vardanian found herself fielding countless questions from friends planning post-COVID travels. “Why Armenia?” they’d ask. “What’s it really like there?” The more she shared stories of her new life in Yerevan – from navigating the morning rush to deciphering her neighbor’s incredibly specific directions – the more people wanted to hear.

The blog’s name came from a late-night conversation with her best friend Sarah, who was planning a Caucasus trip. “But seriously,” Sarah laughed, “why so Armenia? Like, why are you so obsessed?” Ani realized she’d been unconsciously starting every story with “Why so…?” – “Why so much bread at every meal?” “Why so many chess players in the parks?” “Why so incredibly hospitable?”

Mission & Values: Why So Armenia exists to showcase authentic Armenian culture while building bridges between Armenia and the world. We believe in respectful cultural exchange, supporting local businesses, and presenting Armenia as the dynamic, complex, beautiful country it truly is – not just ancient history or political headlines.

Core Values:

  • Authenticity over perfection – Real stories, honest experiences
  • Cultural respect – Honoring traditions while embracing modernity
  • Community connection – Supporting local voices and businesses
  • Accessible storytelling – Making Armenian culture welcoming to everyone

The blog has evolved into a trusted resource for travelers, Armenian diaspora reconnecting with their roots, and anyone curious about this fascinating corner of the world where Europe meets Asia and ancient history lives alongside vibrant modern culture.
