YEREVAN – The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia (MESCS) has officially refuted recent reports circulating on various platforms regarding the closure of 231 schools from September 2026. The Ministry has labeled these claims as misinformation, emphasizing that such discussions are unfounded.
Ministry Affirms Commitment to Educational Development
In a statement released yesterday, the MESCS clarified its stance, asserting that the state policy implemented in the education sector is aimed at the effective development of public education, expanding access to education, and improving its quality, rather than limiting educational opportunities.
“We officially inform that the information spread on various platforms in recent days and the discussions organized around them, that allegedly 231 schools are planned to be closed in the Republic of Armenia from September 2026, do not correspond to reality and are disinformation,” the Ministry stated.
Extensive School Construction Projects Underway
As strong evidence of its commitment, the Ministry highlighted the ongoing large-scale school construction works across the republic. These efforts are leading to the regular opening of new schools and kindergartens in various settlements throughout Armenia.
The Ministry expressed regret that the education sector is being exploited and targeted with the aim of creating unfounded anxiety and misunderstandings within society.
Call for Reliance on Official Sources
The MESCS urged citizens and the professional community genuinely concerned with the development of the education sector not to succumb to manipulations by forces serving various agendas. Instead, it advised them to rely exclusively on official and reliable sources for information.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to operating openly and transparently, providing the public with complete, accurate, and substantiated information regarding initiatives and programs implemented in the education sector.
The statement was issued by Lilit Muradyan on February 20, 2026, at 15:22 local time. The Ministry continues to work towards enhancing the educational landscape of Armenia, ensuring that all citizens have access to quality learning opportunities.
This clarification comes amidst a period of significant national development, with other news from Armenia including reports of 7.2% economic growth in 2025, discussions on COP17 agenda documents in Rome, and ongoing efforts against illegal wildlife trade in the Caucasian region.
