EU Support Transforms Yerevan’s Water Supply System
Yerevan, Armenia – The Delegation of the European Union to Armenia has announced the successful completion of a significant project aimed at improving Yerevan’s water supply. On May 7, EU representatives participated in an event in the Haghhtanak district, marking the successful culmination of a major water infrastructure project co-financed by the EU and its financial institutions.
The comprehensive works involved the restoration and/or construction of over 200 km of water pipelines, the improvement and/or installation of approximately 19,000 household connections, and the renovation of pumping stations. These extensive upgrades have resulted in round-the-clock water supply and a significant reduction in water losses across the city.
Significant Investment in Critical Infrastructure
The total investment for this transformative project amounted to approximately €16.1 million. This includes loan facilities from the European Investment Bank (EIB) totaling $7 million, an additional $7 million in loan facilities from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and a substantial grant of €5.5 million from the EU Neighbourhood Investment Platform.
The project’s successful implementation underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting essential infrastructure development and improving the quality of life for citizens in its partner countries. The enhanced water supply system is expected to provide long-term benefits to Yerevan’s residents, ensuring reliable access to clean water and contributing to the city’s overall development.
Long-Term Benefits for Yerevan Residents
The improvements in water infrastructure are crucial for public health and economic development. Reliable water supply is a cornerstone of modern urban living, supporting households, businesses, and public services. The reduction in water losses also highlights a commitment to sustainable resource management, a key priority for the European Union in its cooperation with partner countries.
This initiative is part of broader EU efforts to foster sustainable development and resilience in the Eastern Partnership region, which includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. By investing in critical infrastructure, the EU aims to strengthen these countries’ economies and improve the well-being of their populations.
The completion of the Yerevan water supply project serves as a tangible example of effective international cooperation and the positive impact that strategic investments can have on local communities. It demonstrates how collaborative efforts between the EU, its financial institutions, and partner countries can address fundamental needs and contribute to a more prosperous and sustainable future.
