Former MP Arman Abovyan Slams Armenian Authorities for ‘Absurd’ Statements
Yerevan, February 26, 2026 – Former Member of Parliament Arman Abovyan has taken to Facebook to express his strong disapproval of the statements and actions of the current Armenian authorities. In a post published on Thursday, February 26, 2026, Abovyan described the government’s rhetoric as ‘absurd’ and often provoking laughter despite the serious situation in Armenia.
Inconsistent Narratives and ‘Gyumri-2’ Operation
Abovyan highlighted several examples of what he considers illogical and contradictory statements. He noted that one official repeatedly claims that ‘oligarchs’ are attempting to carry out a ‘Gyumri-2’ operation. This refers to a past election in Gyumri where the opposition won, which the government apparently presents as a negative event. Abovyan questions the premise, asking why a democratic outcome where people choose the opposition is framed as something negative.
Dire Predictions and Calls for Intervention
Another point of contention for Abovyan is what he describes as a government representative’s grim predictions of various disasters, including economic outflow, floods, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, the moon falling to Earth, mass epidemics, oxygen deprivation, war, and drought. These catastrophes, according to Abovyan, are presented as inevitable consequences if the current government is not re-elected. He views this as a scare tactic designed to manipulate the populace.
Abovyan also pointed out the perceived hypocrisy of a third official who, he claims, requested European intervention in Armenian elections to prevent interference from other countries. Abovyan sarcastically called this an ‘idiotic’ request for intervention to prevent intervention.
Monetization of YouTube Videos as a ‘Political Achievement’
Perhaps the most ‘laughable’ claim for Abovyan was the government’s presentation of YouTube’s decision to monetize Armenian videos as a ‘political achievement’ of the ruling power. He mocked this by suggesting that, following this logic, the government should also claim responsibility for the arrival of spring, the migration of birds, the reproduction of aquarium fish, or the autumn harvest of Jerusalem artichokes as results of their ‘selfless work’.
Abovyan concluded his post by apologizing for approaching these ‘marasmic’ statements from parliamentary and governmental representatives with a bit of humor during such a critical period, but stated that it is no longer possible to take their absurdities seriously.
Context of Public Discourse in Armenia
Abovyan’s critique comes amidst a broader landscape of political discourse in Armenia, where public figures frequently use social media to voice their opinions and engage in debates about national issues. The references to ‘Gyumri-2’ and election interference highlight ongoing political tensions and concerns about democratic processes within the country.
The former MP’s remarks underscore a growing frustration among some segments of the population regarding the perceived quality and sincerity of official communications. His post quickly garnered significant attention and comments, reflecting the public’s engagement with such criticisms.
The debate surrounding the government’s communication strategy and its impact on public perception remains a key aspect of Armenian political life, with figures like Abovyan continuing to challenge official narratives and demand greater accountability.
