The Ohanes John Khachikyan Gyumri Regional Ophthalmological Center, a project of the Armenian EyeCare Project (AECP), has relocated to a new, more spacious and comfortable area within the Gyumri Medical Center. This modern center, equipped with cutting-edge technology, was founded in 2018 thanks to a donation from Luther Khachikyan, son of Ohanes John Khachikyan.
AECP’s Commitment to Regional Eye Care
“This center was established within the framework of the large-scale program for the restoration of regional ophthalmological infrastructures launched by the AECP in 2015. In cooperation with our long-term partners, we are continuously developing regional services, making them more accessible. This year, we plan to establish another diagnostic clinic in the Ararat region, as a result of which the AECP will have a significant presence in all regions of Armenia,” stated Nune Yeghiazaryan, director of the Armenian EyeCare Project.
Continuous Technical Upgrades and Staff Training
As reported to “Armenpress” correspondent by the Gyumri Medical Center, the technical strengthening of the ophthalmological center is continuous. In 2021, it was equipped with the latest generation systems for retinal surgeries and a state-of-the-art microscope, which allowed for the development of vitreoretinal services. In parallel with technical equipment, the AECP pays great attention to the retraining of local medical staff. Leading surgeons from the USA and Russia, who regularly visit Gyumri, perform complex operations and exchange experience with local specialists.
Expanding Access to Eye Care Across Armenia
The relocation and modernization of the Gyumri center are part of a broader initiative by the Armenian EyeCare Project to ensure high-quality eye care is accessible throughout Armenia. The establishment of another diagnostic clinic in the Ararat region will further solidify AECP’s presence, ensuring that advanced ophthalmological services are available to a wider population. This commitment extends beyond providing equipment, emphasizing continuous training and knowledge exchange between international and local medical professionals.
Impact on the Community
The enhanced facilities and advanced equipment at the Gyumri Regional Ophthalmological Center will significantly improve the quality and scope of eye care services available to residents of Gyumri and the surrounding Shirak Province. The ability to perform complex retinal surgeries locally, coupled with ongoing training for medical staff, means that patients will no longer need to travel long distances for specialized treatment, ensuring timely and effective care.
Future Outlook and Regional Development
The Armenian EyeCare Project’s strategic plan to expand its presence to all regions of Armenia underscores a long-term vision for national eye health. By investing in infrastructure, technology, and human capital, AECP is not only addressing immediate healthcare needs but also contributing to the overall development of medical services in remote areas. This sustained effort is expected to have a lasting positive impact on public health and well-being across the country.
