Large Drug Seizure in Syunik: Foreign National Arrested with Kilograms of Heroin and Methamphetamine
Yerevan, Armenia, March 24 – A significant drug smuggling operation has been intercepted in Armenia’s Syunik Province. Law enforcement officials have arrested a foreign national who was attempting to transport several kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine to the capital, Yerevan.
The arrest was the result of a joint special operation conducted on March 16 by the Criminal Police’s anti-drug trafficking unit and the Syunik Regional Department. The operation was launched following reliable intelligence regarding large-scale drug trafficking.
According to preliminary investigation data, the 41-year-old foreign national, in prior criminal agreement with a 40-year-old compatriot, collected smuggled prohibited substances from the Meghri-Kapan highway and was en route to Yerevan by car.
However, the drug dealer’s plans were foiled. Law enforcement officers located and neutralized him in the city of Kapan. During a search of the suspect’s vehicle, an impressive quantity of drugs was discovered: three packages of methamphetamine weighing over three kilograms, more than one kilogram of heroin, and 34 pills.
The 41-year-old man is currently under arrest, and law enforcement agencies are continuing the preliminary investigation to identify other participants in the criminal chain and determine the source of the drugs.
This major seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of Armenian authorities to combat illegal drug trafficking and secure its borders against the flow of illicit substances. The investigation is expected to shed more light on the international connections of this drug smuggling network.
The Armenian police have been actively participating in global anti-fraud efforts, as evidenced by their presence at the Vienna Summit, further demonstrating their commitment to international cooperation in combating organized crime.
This incident also comes amidst a backdrop of various regional and international developments, including discussions between Armenian and Russian leaders on economic ties, and Armenia’s application to the European Peace Fund for third-party support. These broader contexts underscore the complex security environment in which such law enforcement operations take place.
The successful operation in Syunik sends a strong message to those involved in drug trafficking, reaffirming Armenia’s determination to maintain stability and security within its borders and contribute to regional and international efforts against organized crime.
The authorities continue to monitor and address various threats, including those related to national security and regional stability, as highlighted by recent statements from Armenian officials regarding existential challenges and threats facing the country.
Further details regarding the ongoing investigation are expected to be released as they become available. The police urge anyone with information related to drug trafficking to come forward and assist in their efforts to dismantle such criminal networks.
