Yerevan, January 22 – The Armenian Kurdish community, along with representatives of the Yezidi and Assyrian minorities, staged a protest yesterday in front of the United Nations office in Yerevan. The demonstration was held to condemn actions by Syrian Islamists allegedly supported by the Turkish government. Among the participants was Knyaz Hasanov, a member of the ruling ‘Civil Contract’ faction.
Protesters Chant Slogans Against Erdogan and Terrorists
Chanting slogans such as “Erdogan – terrorist” and “Sharaf – terrorist,” the Kurdish community marched to the UN office in Yerevan. Protesters stated that other national minorities in Armenia, including Yezidis and Assyrians, had joined their action.
“We want to voice our protests and grievances regarding the events in Syria, hoping that you will become a platform to make our voice heard worldwide. We do not accept and strongly condemn the market relations mindset based on the massacre of peoples and the destruction of nature,” the protesters declared.
Warning of a Second ISIS Coming
Participants in the protest stated that Turkey is supporting the resurgence of the ‘Islamic State’ terrorist group, which could lead to a continuation of massacres. They recalled past ISIS-organized unrest in Europe, including the burning of establishments, shops, hit-and-run incidents targeting innocent people, robberies, and attempts to terrorize with explosives.
“Even remembering all this is terrifying. Turning a blind eye to the barbaric actions against Kurds will lead to a second coming of ISIS, which will bring the world to ruin,” the participants warned.
Appeal to the UN and Humanitarian Organizations
The gathered individuals called on the UN and humanitarian organizations to support the Kurdish community, emphasizing that the protection of human rights is a guarantee for peaceful coexistence. UN staff accepted a letter from the protesters.
The protest highlights growing concerns within minority communities in Armenia over regional conflicts and their potential to destabilize broader areas, echoing past atrocities committed by extremist groups. The involvement of a member of the ruling party, Knyaz Hasanov, underscores the political significance of the event and the community’s desire for international attention and intervention.
The demonstration remained peaceful, with participants focusing on delivering their message and appealing to international bodies for support. The event concluded with the submission of their letter to the UN, marking a formal plea for action against perceived injustices and the threat of renewed extremist violence.
