Yerevan, January 27 – The S. Sargsyan National Theater has officially inaugurated its new building, located at 3 Henri Vernoy Street in Yerevan. The grand opening ceremony, held a few days ago, marks a new chapter for the esteemed theater, which celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2026.
A Long-Awaited Home for Armenian Theater
Construction of the new building, designed by Isahak Nersisyan, began in 2019. The project was financed through a combination of state budget funds and benefactors, demonstrating a strong commitment to cultural development in Armenia. For 35 years, the S. Sargsyan National Theater operated within the premises of the Yerevan State Institute of Theater and Cinema, lacking a dedicated facility of its own.
Modern Facilities for Enhanced Performances
The newly constructed building is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed to enhance both artistic performances and audience experience. It features a new stage, modern lighting and sound systems, and all necessary technical equipment. The theater also includes well-appointed dressing rooms and makeup areas for performers.
The first floor of the building houses a small stage, ideal for experimental performances and workshops, fostering innovation within the theater. The second floor boasts a large auditorium with a seating capacity for over 230 spectators, providing ample space for larger productions and a comfortable viewing experience for the audience.
Opening Performance and Future Prospects
The inauguration of the new building was celebrated with a special performance of Maurice Maeterlinck’s “The Miracle of Saint Anthony.” This production marked the beginning of a new era for the S. Sargsyan National Theater in its permanent home.
The National Theater was founded in 1991 by the renowned actor Sos Sargsyan, whose legacy continues to inspire its artistic endeavors. The new building provides a stable and modern platform for the theater to continue its mission of enriching Armenian culture and attracting new audiences.
Impact on Yerevan’s Cultural Landscape
The opening of the S. Sargsyan National Theater’s new building is a significant event for Yerevan’s cultural landscape. It not only provides a dedicated space for a prominent theater but also contributes to the city’s artistic infrastructure, offering more opportunities for cultural events and performances. This development is expected to further solidify Yerevan’s position as a vibrant cultural hub in the region.
