Yerevan, January 28 – A bronze statue of Artsakh Hero Robert Abajyan was unveiled today in the courtyard of Yerevan School No. 147, named after him. The sculpture, created by Artush Papoyan, depicts Abajyan holding a grenade, with his famous words, “This position is for the one who surrenders…” inscribed on the pedestal.
A Son’s Legacy: A Father’s Pride
Robert Abajyan’s father, Alexander Abajyan, shared his emotions with journalists at the ceremony. “When I first saw the statue, only the head was made. At that moment, my mother called and asked where I was. I said, ‘I’m standing next to Kyaj,’ that’s how much it resembled him. I was waiting for them to bring my Robert to the school. Sooner or later, it had to happen. This year marks his 30th birthday, and he will finally be in his school,” he stated.
Alexander Abajyan emphasized that the date of the unveiling was not accidental, coinciding with the 34th anniversary of the formation of the Armenian Armed Forces. Having dedicated his son, the most precious thing, to the homeland, he wished for the Armenian Army to always be strong and for the soldiers to serve under a peaceful sky.
The Heroic Act of Robert Abajyan
Born on November 16, 1996, Robert Abajyan was killed during the Four-Day Artsakh War on April 2, while defending a position in the Martakert direction. Abajyan fought alone against overwhelming enemy forces until his last bullet. Noticing the enemy approaching, Abajyan made a final communication, stating that he had already pulled the pin from his last grenade and was ready. Seeing the approaching adversary, Abajyan concealed the armed grenade in his palm and raised his hands as if surrendering. Allowing the enemy to get close enough, Abajyan released the grenade, detonating it and killing several enemy soldiers along with himself.
For his exceptional courage and bravery, on May 8, 2016, by decree of the President of the Republic of Artsakh, he was posthumously awarded the highest title of “Hero of Artsakh” and the “Golden Eagle” Order.
Commemoration and National Significance
The unveiling ceremony underscored the enduring legacy of Robert Abajyan and his sacrifice for the homeland. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and dedication of Armenian soldiers.
The event was attended by various officials, military personnel, students, and citizens, all coming together to pay tribute to a national hero. The presence of Robert’s father, Alexander Abajyan, added a deeply personal and emotional dimension to the ceremony, highlighting the profound impact of such sacrifices on families and the nation.
The school, now bearing his name, will continue to serve as a beacon of remembrance, inspiring future generations with the values of courage, patriotism, and self-sacrifice that Robert Abajyan embodied.
The statue, a permanent fixture in the school courtyard, will stand as a testament to his unwavering spirit and his ultimate act of defiance against the enemy, ensuring that his heroic deeds are never forgotten.
The Armenian Armed Forces continue to commemorate such heroes, reinforcing the national commitment to defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
