Yerevan, June 18 – The Armenian government, during its session yesterday, approved a decision to relocate the ‘Vahagn Vishapakagh’ monument. The statue, currently situated at the intersection of Admiral Isakov Avenue and Sebastia Street, will be moved to Russia Square, adjacent to Alexander Myasnikyan Square, in front of the Yerevan City Hall.
Reasons for Relocation: Enhancing Visibility and Cultural Impact
According to the government’s statement, the monument’s current location is one of Yerevan’s major transport hubs. Due to intense traffic flows, road infrastructure, and specific area organization, the monument is not fully visible or perceptible to citizens and visitors. This hinders the complete artistic and ideological perception of the monument and limits the possibility of forming a cultural and public environment around it.
The relocation to a more appropriate urban environment is expected to ensure broader public accessibility, improve visibility, highlight the monument’s cultural and symbolic significance, and create conditions for its preservation and proper presentation. The decision was made to allow the Mayor of Yerevan to proceed with this move.
Significance of the ‘Vahagn Vishapakagh’ Monument
The ‘Vahagn Vishapakagh’ (Vahagn the Dragon-Slayer) monument is a significant cultural landmark in Yerevan, representing a legendary hero from Armenian mythology. Its relocation aims to give it a more prominent place where its historical and artistic value can be fully appreciated by both residents and tourists.
Urban Development and Public Spaces
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance urban aesthetics and create more accessible public spaces in Yerevan. By moving the monument to a central location, the city aims to foster a stronger connection between its rich history and contemporary urban life, making cultural heritage more integral to the daily experience of its citizens.
The government’s decision underscores a commitment to preserving and promoting Armenian cultural heritage while adapting the urban landscape to better serve its residents and visitors.
