YEREVAN, Armenia – The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Yerevan recently hosted a vibrant Yalda celebration, gathering a distinguished group of Iranologists, Orientalists, professors and teachers of the Persian language from Armenian schools, students of Iranology, and Armenian learners of Persian. The event underscored the rich cultural heritage of Iran and the importance of its transmission to future generations.

Ambassador Shirgholami Highlights Yalda’s Enduring Significance

During the ceremony, Dr. Shirgholami, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, extended a warm welcome to the attendees. He expressed profound appreciation for the dedicated efforts of the professors holding Iranology chairs and the teachers of the Persian language. Ambassador Shirgholami eloquently described Yalda as one of Iran’s most beautiful and meaningful celebrations, symbolizing the timeless triumph of light over darkness and embodying concepts of blessing, fertility, and compassion.

In a pivotal part of his address, Dr. Shirgholami stressed the critical importance of preserving Yalda and other traditional Iranian celebrations. He emphasized the need to transmit these invaluable cultural values to younger generations. He noted that through the cherished traditions of reciting Hafez’s poetry and sharing instructive stories on this auspicious night, young people and children are afforded a unique opportunity to become more intimately acquainted with Iranian and Islamic culture.

Dr. Voskanyan on Yalda as a Symbol of Iranian Civilization

Echoing the Ambassador’s sentiments, Dr. Voskanyan also spoke, referring to Yalda as one of Iran’s ancient festivals and a potent symbol of the country’s rich culture and civilization. He articulated that this celebration has historically played a significant role in fostering Iran’s stability, resilience, and independence. Dr. Voskanyan further asserted that the diligent preservation of such festivals and traditions has been instrumental in ensuring the continuity and vitality of Iran’s civilization, a legacy that he believes will undoubtedly endure into the future.

Cultural Performances Enrich the Evening

The ceremony was further enriched by cultural performances that captivated the audience. Students of the Persian language from various Armenian schools, alongside students of Iranology, recited Persian poems, showcasing their linguistic prowess and appreciation for classical Persian literature. The event culminated in a memorable performance by the Mehr Ayin music ensemble. The ensemble presented a selection of traditional Iranian music, which was received with enthusiastic applause and appreciation from all present, adding a harmonious conclusion to the evening’s festivities.

The Yalda celebration at the Iranian Embassy in Yerevan served as a powerful reminder of the enduring power of cultural traditions to unite communities and preserve heritage across borders.
