Yerevan City Hall Responds to Green Space Concerns, Highlights Reforestation Efforts
Yerevan, April 7 – Yerevan City Hall has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media regarding the reduction of green spaces within the city. Mayor Tigran Avinyan, during a working consultation today, asserted that Yerevan’s green fund has, in fact, expanded significantly in recent years.
“We often encounter alarming scenes on social media depicting the disappearance of Yerevan’s green fund,” Avinyan stated, as reported by “Pastinfo.” “However, in recent years, the green fund of Yerevan has increased by approximately 21,000 trees and 60,000 square meters of area, and this is one of the major projects.”
New Forest Belt Project in Nubarashen
Sirarpi Haykazyan, Acting Head of the Environmental Protection Department, provided further details on the creation of a forest belt adjacent to the Nubarashen highway. This ambitious project, which commenced in November 2025, aims to establish a new green area spanning 8.5 hectares.
Haykazyan elaborated that the plan involves planting around 10,000 trees in the designated area. Significant preparatory work has already been completed, including the construction of a 50 cubic meter water basin, a pumping station, and the installation of an irrigation system. The actual tree planting is expected to take place by the end of the current month.
This initiative directly addresses public concerns about urban greenery and underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing its environmental landscape. The Mayor’s statements and the ongoing projects aim to reassure residents that efforts are being made to not only preserve but also expand Yerevan’s green infrastructure.
The city’s administration emphasizes the importance of these projects in improving air quality, biodiversity, and the overall quality of life for its citizens. The increase in green spaces is presented as a tangible outcome of the city’s environmental policies and a counter-narrative to the negative perceptions circulated online.
The focus on large-scale tree planting and the creation of new forest belts signifies a strategic approach to urban planning, prioritizing ecological sustainability alongside urban development. The completion of the Nubarashen project is anticipated to be a major step in this direction, contributing substantially to Yerevan’s green footprint.
The City Hall’s proactive communication on this matter reflects an effort to maintain transparency and engage with public discourse on environmental issues, ensuring that citizens are informed about the ongoing initiatives to enhance the city’s natural assets.
