Yerevan Metro’s Ajapnyak Station Construction Scheduled for 2026-2031
Yerevan, January 13 – The strategic development plan for Yerevan’s transport infrastructure is entering a practical phase. The construction of the new Ajapnyak metro station is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2031, with a total cost estimated at 98 billion drams, fully funded by the Armenian government.
Project Details and Funding
The Yerevan City Hall has clarified the timeline and financial details for the construction of the new ‘Ajapnyak’ metro station. According to the presented report, the design phase, which ran from 2021 to 2025, has been completed. The next five-year period, from 2026 to 2031, will be dedicated to the construction works themselves.
The total cost of the project is estimated at 98 billion drams (approximately 245 million USD, based on current exchange rates). The project is planned to be implemented exclusively with funding from the Government of the Republic of Armenia, without the involvement of international loan facilities. This approach underscores the government’s commitment to self-reliance in major infrastructure projects.
International Standards and Procurement
Given the limited capabilities of local construction potential, the project’s management and technical supervision will be carried out according to international FIDIC standards. A special procurement procedure is being developed to ensure compliance with these rigorous international benchmarks, guaranteeing high quality and efficient execution of the construction.
This adherence to international standards aims to mitigate potential challenges associated with large-scale infrastructure projects and ensure transparency and effectiveness in the construction process. The city authorities are keen on ensuring that the Ajapnyak station meets global best practices in metro construction and operation.
Next Steps and Land Acquisition
For the project to officially commence, a government decision recognizing the area as a public priority interest is awaited. This crucial step will be followed by the expropriation of land necessary for the station’s construction and related infrastructure. Mayor Tigran Avinyan has instructed that the final project package be ready by the end of January, indicating a swift progression towards the implementation phase.
The expropriation process will be handled in accordance with Armenian law, ensuring fair compensation for affected landowners and businesses. The city administration is working to finalize all legal and administrative procedures to avoid any delays once construction is set to begin.
Impact on Yerevan’s Transport Network
The construction of the Ajapnyak station is a significant component of Yerevan’s broader transport infrastructure development strategy. This expansion of the metro system is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, improve public transport accessibility for residents of the Ajapnyak district, and contribute to the overall modernization of the city’s urban environment.
The Ajapnyak district is a densely populated area, and the new metro station will provide a much-needed efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport for its residents, connecting them directly to the city center and other key areas. This project is anticipated to have a positive socio-economic impact, enhancing urban mobility and reducing commuting times.
Other Developments in Armenia
