Yerevan, Armenia – The Yerevan Municipality is set to revolutionize urban management by implementing artificial intelligence tools, with plans to acquire specialized vehicles next year to monitor the city’s infrastructure. These vehicles, equipped with advanced technology, will patrol the streets to record the condition of asphalt, identify illegal advertisements, and detect waste accumulation.
AI Integration for Enhanced Urban Monitoring
Tigran Avinyan, the Deputy Mayor of Yerevan, announced this development during a working meeting, as reported by “Armenpress.” Avinyan highlighted the progress already made in integrating AI tools into city governance.
“We are already receiving data on potholes in Yerevan through cameras installed on our buses and an integrated artificial intelligence system, effectively without human intervention or even the ‘Active Citizen’ platform,” Avinyan stated.
The upcoming year will see the acquisition of a dedicated vehicle equipped with Lidar technology. This vehicle will traverse all streets, recording not only the condition of the asphalt but also accumulating waste in various areas and illegal advertisements. “It will record everything we program it to,” Avinyan added.
Automating City Management Functions
This initiative aims to automate functions that previously required various departments to physically inspect and address issues. Avinyan noted that, consequently, the roles of these departments would undergo some changes.
The move signifies a strategic shift towards leveraging technology for more efficient and proactive urban management. By automating the data collection process for critical urban issues, the municipality expects to streamline operations, reduce response times, and improve the overall quality of city services.
Impact on City Services and Efficiency
The introduction of AI-equipped vehicles is expected to have a significant impact on several aspects of city management:
- Road Maintenance: Real-time data on asphalt conditions will enable faster identification of potholes and damaged roads, leading to more timely repairs and improved road safety.
- Waste Management: Automated detection of waste accumulation will allow for more efficient deployment of cleaning services, contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
- Urban Aesthetics: The identification of illegal advertisements will help the municipality enforce regulations, preserving the city’s visual appeal.
This technological advancement is part of Yerevan’s broader vision to become a smart city, utilizing innovative solutions to address urban challenges and enhance the quality of life for its residents. The municipality’s commitment to integrating AI reflects a modern approach to governance, focusing on data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency.
The specific timeline for the deployment of these new vehicles and the full implementation of the AI system will be detailed in the coming months, as the procurement process moves forward. This initiative positions Yerevan at the forefront of urban innovation in the region, demonstrating a proactive stance towards maintaining and improving its urban infrastructure.
