Yerevan to Restrict Private Vehicle Access on Certain Streets, Prioritizing Public Transport

YEREVAN, January 12. /Novosti-Armenia/. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan announced today during an operational meeting that the city plans to restrict private vehicle access on certain streets, allowing only public transport. This measure will be implemented once a new, comprehensive public transport system is fully established.

The Mayor emphasized that the introduction of 250 new 18-meter buses will create opportunities for new regulations concerning private passenger cars, whose numbers are increasing year by year.

Benefits of the New Public Transport System

“Each of these 18-meter buses replaces 80-100 passenger cars, and we can make these comparisons very clearly,” Avinyan stated. He also highlighted that these electric buses produce almost no emissions, thus significantly contributing to environmental protection.

“If we compare 250 buses with every 100 cars, it means we are talking about 25,000 cars. In other words, the emissions of 25,000 cars are simply removed from the city,” the Mayor explained. According to Avinyan, this is a crucial factor, especially from the perspective of programs aimed at improving air quality.

Impact on Traffic and Environment

The initiative is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the Armenian capital and significantly reduce air pollution. By encouraging residents to use public transport, the city aims to create a more sustainable and livable urban environment.

The new public transport system, featuring modern electric buses, is a key component of Yerevan’s strategy to modernize its infrastructure and address growing environmental concerns. The Mayor’s announcement underscores the city’s commitment to prioritizing public health and urban efficiency.

Further details on which specific streets will be subject to these restrictions and the timeline for their implementation are expected to be announced as the new public transport system becomes fully operational.
