Snow, Blizzard, and Ice Expected Across Armenia

Yerevan, January 20, 2026 – A period of intense winter weather is forecast for Armenia, including its capital Yerevan, from January 20 to January 24. The Armenian Hydrometeorological and Monitoring Center has issued a warning for heavy snowfall, blizzards, and icy conditions, particularly in mountainous regions.

According to the forecast, snow is expected in Yerevan on January 20 and 23. The days of January 21, 22, and 24 are anticipated to be without precipitation. For the rest of the republic, snow is predicted for most regions on January 20, and in isolated areas during the night of January 21, and on January 23 and the night of January 24. The daytime of January 21, as well as January 22 and the daytime of January 24, are expected to be precipitation-free.

Temperature Fluctuations and Road Conditions

A significant drop in temperature is also anticipated. Nighttime temperatures are expected to decrease by 7-10 degrees Celsius between January 20 and 22. Conversely, during the night hours of January 23 and 24, temperatures will gradually rise by the same margin.

The wind will be from the southwest, blowing at 2-5 meters per second. Residents and travelers are advised to exercise caution, especially in mountainous areas where blizzards and low horizontal visibility are expected. Road conditions are likely to be hazardous due to ice.

Historical Context and Public Advisory

Historical climatic data for Yerevan on January 20 shows a maximum air temperature of 12.5°C recorded in 2018 and a minimum of -28.8°C in 1972. The average daily air temperature for this date is -4.3°C, indicating that the upcoming cold spell is significant.

The public is urged to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions, such as limiting travel, ensuring proper heating, and being prepared for potential disruptions. The Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations has not yet issued specific advisories, but residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news channels and official meteorological sources.

The severe weather conditions could impact daily commutes and outdoor activities. Drivers are advised to use winter tires and maintain safe distances, while pedestrians should be wary of slippery surfaces. Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.

This weather event follows a series of recent incidents, including reports of icy conditions on Isakov Avenue and Yerevan being described as an ‘ice square’ by local media, underscoring the potential severity of the upcoming forecast.
