Yerevan Implements Comprehensive Strategy to Tackle Traffic Congestion
Yerevan, January 30 – The continuous increase in the number of vehicles in the Armenian capital has prompted city authorities to adopt systemic solutions to traffic congestion. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan presented a comprehensive strategy to the government, focusing on new technologies and the modernization of the transport network.
Smart Traffic Lights and Public Transport Expansion
A primary direction for solving the problem is the introduction of a modern traffic management system. The full implementation of AI-powered “smart” traffic lights is expected to be completed within approximately 1.5 years. This system will automatically regulate traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks in the city’s busiest areas.
In the final phase of transport reforms, the city plans to acquire 250 new 18-meter buses, which will significantly increase passenger transportation capacity. This move aims to enhance the efficiency and reach of public transport, providing a robust alternative to private vehicle use.
Metro Expansion and Future Considerations
The construction of the Ajapnyak metro station is also of strategic importance. This expansion is projected to increase the number of metro users by approximately 22 percent, laying the groundwork for further development of the underground transport system. Mayor Avinyan also noted that, in the event of an uncontrolled increase in the number of vehicles, certain restrictions might be considered in the future. However, such measures would only be discussed when the public transport system is fully capable of ensuring comfortable movement for citizens.
This initiative reflects Yerevan’s commitment to improving urban mobility and creating a more sustainable and efficient transportation network for its residents. The city aims to balance the needs of its growing population with environmental considerations and the overall quality of urban life.
