YEREVAN, February 23 – Lusine Gevorgyan, Chairman of the Tourism Committee of Armenia, addressed new airline routes and flight openings during a press conference today. These developments are expected to significantly boost Armenia’s tourism sector and enhance its connectivity with key international destinations.
Turkish Airlines to Facilitate Yerevan-Los Angeles Direct Flights
Gevorgyan highlighted the persistent public interest in a direct flight between Yerevan and Los Angeles. She confirmed that “Turkish Airlines” is soon to enter Armenia, possessing the capacity and potential to operate such a route. “I am always asked about the direct flight from Yerevan to Los Angeles. Let me mention that ‘Turkish Airlines’ is coming to Armenia soon, and they operate such a flight and have that potential,” Gevorgyan stated.
She further elaborated that Turkish Airlines is recognized as one of the world’s three most powerful airlines, making it a strong candidate to establish the direct Yerevan-Los Angeles connection. This move is anticipated to cater to the significant Armenian diaspora in Los Angeles and foster increased cultural and economic ties.
Discussions Underway for Direct Flights to China and Regional Tourism
In addition to the promising developments with Turkish Airlines, Gevorgyan also revealed ongoing negotiations for direct air transportation with China. This initiative follows a notable increase in Chinese tourists visiting Armenia last year. “There is also an increase in Chinese tourists entering Armenia through land checkpoints from Georgia, and if we have direct flights from Yerevan to other cities in China, we can create new regional tours jointly with Georgia, which Georgia successfully does with Azerbaijan,” Gevorgyan noted, emphasizing the potential for collaborative regional tourism packages.
New Routes to Riga and London Set to Launch
The Tourism Committee Chairman also announced other significant flight expansions. She recently discussed the entry of “Air Baltic” into Armenia with the Latvian Ambassador. As a result, direct flights from Yerevan to Riga are scheduled to commence in May. Furthermore, direct flights connecting Yerevan and London are expected to begin in June, offering more travel options for both Armenian residents and international visitors.
These new flight routes are part of a broader strategy to enhance Armenia’s accessibility and attractiveness as a tourist destination. The committee aims to diversify its tourism markets and strengthen its position on the global tourism map through improved air connectivity.
Impact on Armenian Tourism and Economy
The introduction of these new direct flights and partnerships is expected to have a substantial positive impact on Armenia’s tourism industry. Easier access for tourists from the United States, China, and European countries will likely lead to an increase in visitor numbers, boosting local businesses, and creating new employment opportunities within the sector. The government’s proactive approach in expanding air travel options underscores its commitment to developing tourism as a key driver of economic growth.
The Tourism Committee continues to work on various initiatives to promote Armenia’s rich cultural heritage, historical sites, and natural beauty to a wider international audience. These efforts, combined with improved transportation links, are poised to position Armenia as an increasingly popular destination for global travelers.
