YEREVAN, Armenia, July 13, 2023 – The Armenian government, during its session today, July 13, decided to dissolve the Yerevan Armenian-American “Erebuni” State Medical College, a state non-commercial organization under the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports. The decision also includes the retrieval of property.
Rationalization and Cost-Effectiveness Cited
The necessity for adopting this draft decision is driven by the rationalization of the placement of state educational institutions and the programs they implement. The project aims to enhance the management and cost-effectiveness of medical vocational education programs in Yerevan, as well as to concentrate resources.
Specifically, the dissolution of the “Yerevan Armenian-American “Erebuni” State Medical College” allows for the optimization of utilized areas and the educational and material base, thereby reducing the state’s burden.
Educational Landscape in Yerevan
Currently, there are four state and seven accredited non-state educational institutions operating in Yerevan that offer healthcare-related specializations. Adjacent to the “Yerevan Armenian-American “Erebuni” State Medical College” is the “Erebuni Medical Academy” Foundation, which received institutional accreditation in 2022 and offers almost the same specializations.
Enrollment at the Yerevan Armenian-American “Erebuni” State Medical College has been declining year by year, with 420 students currently enrolled, of whom 140 are graduating in the 2022-2023 academic year.
It is important to note that the building and educational-laboratory conditions of the neighboring “Erebuni Medical Academy” Foundation are significantly more favorable for organizing vocational education.
Future for Students and Staff
The continuation of studies for students of the “Yerevan Armenian-American “Erebuni” State Medical College” will be organized under the same conditions (free/same tuition fee) at the “Erebuni Medical Academy” Foundation (taking into account the student’s wishes) or at other state or accredited non-state educational institutions. The majority of the college’s employees are expected to continue their work at the “Erebuni Medical Academy” Foundation.
