GYUMRI, Shirak Province – A shocking incident in Gyumri has led to the arrest of a mother on suspicion of murdering her one-year-old child. The infant’s body was discovered in a city landfill, prompting an immediate investigation by law enforcement.
Disturbing Details Emerge in Infant’s Death
The tragic discovery was made on August 31, 2019, when citizens reported finding a child’s body in the Gyumri city landfill. An operative group dispatched to the scene confirmed the presence of a one-year-old girl, whose hands and feet were bound with adhesive tape.
Karen Gabrielyan, Prosecutor of Shirak Province, confirmed to NEWS.am that factual data obtained during the investigation established a harrowing sequence of events. “It has been proven that the mother bound the child’s hands and feet with adhesive tape, put a cloth in her mouth, threw the child in the landfill, and then covered her with garbage,” Gabrielyan stated.
Social Hardship Cited as Alleged Motive
The mother, whose identity has not been released, reportedly justified her actions by citing severe social hardship. According to the prosecutor, she claimed she was unable to care for or feed the child. Following these revelations, the woman was apprehended by police.
The incident has led to the initiation of a criminal case under Article 104 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, pertaining to murder.
Police Swiftly Identify and Apprehend Suspect
Following the discovery, officers from the Mush Police Department launched an urgent operative-investigative effort. These measures quickly led to the identification of the child.
Later that evening, police located the child’s mother on Shirakatsy Street in Gyumri and brought her in for questioning at the Mush Police Department, where she was subsequently arrested.
