YEREVAN, Armenia – On January 11, 2020, two female residents of Yerevan were apprehended and brought to the Nor Nork police department on suspicion of extortion. The arrests were made possible through a joint operative-investigative effort by the Internal Security Department of the Police, the Criminal Investigation Department of the Yerevan City Police Department, and the Criminal Investigation Department of the Nor Nork Police Department.

Details of the Extortion Case

The arrested individuals have been identified as 26-year-old Tehmina Shahbazyan and 21-year-old Viktoria Damburajyan. They are suspected of extorting 1 million Armenian Dram (AMD) from Karen G., a 34-year-old resident of Yerevan, during the period from November 2019 to January 2020. Karen G. is reportedly employed as a deliveryman for an LLC operating in Yerevan.

The Threat and the Demand

According to sources, the women allegedly threatened Karen G. with the publication of information related to his personal life if he failed to pay the demanded sum. This threat formed the basis of the extortion scheme.

Arrest and Evidence

Following their apprehension, a personal search of Tehmina Shahbazyan revealed a portion of the extorted money. This evidence is crucial to the ongoing investigation.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

A criminal case has been initiated by the Avan and Nor Nork Administrative Districts Investigation Department of the Yerevan City Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Armenia. Both Tehmina Shahbazyan and Viktoria Damburajyan have been detained in connection with the case.

Broader Context of Incidents in Yerevan

This incident is one of several reported in Yerevan, highlighting ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address various criminal activities. Recent reports have included discoveries such as a man’s body in a water pipeline in Malatia and a zebra escaping the Zoo and appearing on Myasnikyan Avenue, alongside more serious incidents like the death of a one-year-old child due to beating, where the biological mother has not yet been charged.

The authorities continue to investigate the full scope of this extortion case and other incidents to ensure public safety and uphold the law in Yerevan.
