The European Union Delegation to Armenia announced that the first historic EU-Armenia Summit, scheduled for May 4-5 in Yerevan, marks a pivotal moment in bilateral relations. This summit underscores the European Union’s unwavering commitment to Armenia’s sovereignty, resilience, and reform agenda.

High-Level Representation and Key Discussions

The summit will feature high-level participation, including European Commission leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, representing the European Union, and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, representing Armenia. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas will also be in attendance.

Leaders will review recent progress in bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation across various sectors, with a particular focus on the economy, transport infrastructure, and security. Discussions will also cover joint efforts to enhance stability and sustainable growth in the South Caucasus. Regional and global developments, including the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, are also on the agenda.

Key Outcomes and Enhanced Cooperation

A significant outcome of the summit will be the launch of the EU-Armenia partnership in transport infrastructure. This initiative will foster cooperation in transport, energy, digital technologies, and people-to-people contacts, through dedicated high-level dialogues on transport infrastructure and transport issues. This will be complemented by initiatives aimed at mobilizing EU private investments in Armenia.

The parties are also expected to take concrete steps to deepen cooperation in security and defense, notably through the establishment of a new EU partnership mission in Armenia.

The summit will conclude with the signing of a working agreement between the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (“Frontex”) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia, a move designed to further enhance security cooperation.

A Commitment to Peace and Prosperity

This inaugural EU-Armenia Summit highlights the tangible benefits of cooperation between the EU and Armenia, as well as the EU’s commitment to promoting peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus.

The event is expected to draw significant attention, reflecting the growing importance of Armenia in the EU’s Eastern Partnership policy. The discussions and agreements reached during the summit are anticipated to lay a strong foundation for future collaboration and mutual development.

The EU’s continued support for Armenia’s democratic reforms and economic development remains a cornerstone of their relationship. The summit provides a platform to address current challenges and explore new avenues for cooperation, ensuring a stable and prosperous future for both the EU and Armenia.
