Yerevan Police Uncover New Drug Trafficking Cases via Telegram
Yerevan, May 7 – Erebuni district police have successfully uncovered new cases of illegal drug trafficking, with suspects reportedly utilizing the Telegram messaging platform for their illicit activities. The operations led to the seizure of marijuana, zip-lock bags, and scales, according to a report from the Police of the Republic of Armenia.
First Discovery: 51-Year-Old Resident Arrested
Officers from the Erebuni district community police received intelligence indicating that a 51-year-old man residing on Pushkin Street in Yerevan was storing drugs in his apartment with the intent to sell. This information was verified and substantiated, leading to the initiation of criminal proceedings on April 27 by the investigative department of Erebuni and Nubarashen administrative districts.
On the same day, a search was conducted at the 51-year-old man’s residence. Authorities discovered an electronic scale, numerous zip-lock bags, and six packages containing a total of over 800 grams of yellowish-green substance. The homeowner admitted that the seized substance was marijuana, which he had acquired from various Telegram users with the intention of selling it.
Second Discovery: Foreign National Involved
Just one day prior, on April 26, Erebuni community police had also investigated and confirmed another tip regarding drug possession with intent to sell. As part of the initiated criminal proceedings, a search was carried out at the home of a 28-year-old foreign national residing in Sari Tagh.
In this second case, police found an electronic scale, bags, one package containing 93 grams of yellowish-green substance, and eight foil packages with a total of approximately eight grams of the same substance. The foreign national stated that the packaged marijuana belonged to him.
Ongoing Investigations
Preliminary investigations are currently underway for both cases. The police continue their efforts to combat illegal drug circulation within Yerevan, emphasizing the growing challenge posed by the use of encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram for such activities.
The police department reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.
