YEREVAN, May 9, 2026 – Aram Sargsyan, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia, today issued a stern warning against actions that could undermine Armenia’s strategic alliance with Russia, following a speech by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Yerevan. Sargsyan’s comments came during a press briefing at Victory Park, where he addressed concerns about the diplomatic fallout from Zelenskyy’s remarks.
Zelenskyy’s Speech and the Diplomatic Note
During a summit held in Yerevan, President Zelenskyy reportedly made statements that some analysts interpreted as threats directed at Russia. This led to Russia issuing a diplomatic note to Armenia, prompting a debate among Armenian political figures regarding national sovereignty and allied relations.
Some Armenian analysts argue that Armenia, as a sovereign state, has the right to host any leader it chooses. However, Sargsyan countered this by highlighting the ethical considerations within allied relationships.
“The issue is not about the right, but about the attitude towards your allied state. You allow Zelenskyy to come here and boast that he can hit Red Square appropriately. This is the question,” Sargsyan stated, emphasizing the provocative nature of the speech.
The Importance of the Russia-Armenia Alliance
Sargsyan underscored the critical role of Russia in maintaining regional stability. He warned that Russia’s withdrawal from the region would disrupt the delicate balance that has been established over centuries.
“If Russia leaves our region, it will break the balance that has been formed in this region for centuries,” he cautioned. He stressed the need for Armenia to maintain mutually beneficial relations with Russia, without becoming subservient.
“It is a very important circumstance that we continue to have equal and very mutually beneficial relations; no one says that you will become, I don’t know, a slave,” he added.
Consequences of Provocative Rhetoric
Sargsyan asserted that antagonizing a powerful ally like Russia is not merely an act of folly but a betrayal of national interests. He suggested that if Armenia desires complete autonomy and sovereignty, it should formally renounce its allied status with Russia.
“To antagonize us with such a country as Russia under these conditions is not stupidity, but direct betrayal,” Sargsyan declared. He further noted that if Armenia wishes to be independent, it must acknowledge the boundaries and ethics that come with such a stance. Should Armenia choose to act completely independently, Russia would also pursue its own interests.
“If you want to be independent, sovereign, that’s great, much better, but that sovereignty also has its limits and its ethics,” he explained.
Regional Instability and Future Implications
Sargsyan concluded by observing the rapid changes occurring globally and their potential impact on the region. He emphasized that the ongoing developments would inevitably affect Armenia.
“All this, what is happening now in this region, will affect us,” he warned, urging a cautious and strategic approach to foreign policy.
The debate surrounding Zelenskyy’s visit and its implications highlights the complex geopolitical landscape Armenia navigates, balancing its sovereignty with the imperatives of its long-standing alliances.
