Yerevan, May 12 – French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to arrive in Armenia for a state visit in May. This was discussed during a meeting between Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan and French Ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies, as reported by the Armenian government’s press service.

Macron’s Visit: A Focus on Bilateral Cooperation

The Deputy Prime Minister particularly emphasized the importance of Macron’s presence in Armenia for the European Political Community (EPC) summit on May 4, followed by his state visit on May 5.

Ahead of the visit, detailed discussions were held on several key issues on the bilateral agenda. These include drinking water supply and sanitation projects, the involvement of the French side in the construction of the Sisian-Kajaran section of the North-South road corridor, educational cooperation, and other strategically important programs and initiatives.

Previous Visits and Invitations

It is worth noting that President Macron previously visited Armenia in October 2018 to attend the Francophonie Summit held in Yerevan. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has extended six invitations to Macron to visit Armenia between 2022 and 2025, highlighting the strong desire for continued high-level engagement between the two nations.

Key Areas of Discussion

  • Water Supply and Sanitation: Critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving access to clean drinking water and efficient wastewater management.
  • North-South Road Corridor: French involvement in the construction of a vital section of this strategic transportation route, enhancing regional connectivity.
  • Educational Cooperation: Initiatives to strengthen academic and cultural ties, promoting exchanges and joint programs between Armenian and French institutions.
  • Other Strategic Projects: Broader discussions on various strategic initiatives that aim to deepen the partnership between Armenia and France across multiple sectors.

The upcoming visit underscores the growing strategic partnership between Armenia and France, with both nations seeking to expand cooperation in various fields. The discussions held between Deputy Prime Minister Khachatryan and Ambassador Decottignies indicate a comprehensive agenda designed to yield concrete outcomes from President Macron’s visit.

The Armenian government views this visit as a significant opportunity to further solidify diplomatic ties and foster economic and cultural exchanges. The focus on infrastructure development, particularly the North-South road corridor, highlights France’s commitment to supporting Armenia’s economic growth and regional integration. Similarly, educational cooperation is expected to open new avenues for academic collaboration and cultural understanding.

The visit is anticipated to strengthen the bond between the two countries, not only at the governmental level but also through people-to-people connections, building upon the historical and cultural affinities shared by Armenia and France.
