Today, May 28, a traffic accident took place in the Gegharkunik region of Armenia. At approximately 2:00 PM, a ‘Toyota Camry’ veered off the road on the 67th kilometer section of the Yerevan-Sevan-Ijevan highway, at the beginning of the road leading to the peninsula. The vehicle then crashed into the stairs of an underground pedestrian underpass, colliding with a concrete retaining wall.

Two Injured and Hospitalized

According to photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, as a result of the accident, two individuals sustained bodily injuries and were transported to the ‘Sevan’ Medical Center for treatment. The identities of the driver and the injured are currently being established as part of the ongoing investigation.

Emergency Services Respond to the Scene

Patrol officers Arsen Kirakosyan and Artur Danielyan from the same company immediately cordoned off the area. Information about the accident was forwarded from the Gegharkunik regional battalion of the Patrol Service to the Sevan investigative department of the Gegharkunik regional investigative division of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia.

Criminal Proceedings Initiated

An investigative team, led by Sargis Margaryan, Head of the Department, Arman Hovhannisyan, Deputy Head of the Department, Torgom Chandoyan, Head of the Sevan Investigative Department, and the duty investigator, arrived at the scene. Criminal proceedings have been initiated by the Sevan investigative department regarding the incident. The investigation is currently focused on identifying the driver and the injured parties involved in the accident.

Broader Context of Road Safety in Armenia

This incident is one of several traffic accidents reported recently in Armenia. Related publications highlight a chain collision in Yerevan involving multiple vehicles, a car accident in Hrazdan where rescuers extricated a trapped driver, and other incidents across various regions. These events underscore the ongoing challenges related to road safety in the country.

Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such incidents. The Investigative Committee will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
