YEREVAN, Armenia, June 13 – The Armenian Cinema Fund has announced the postponement of its program at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The decision stems from a dispute regarding the exclusive rights to a significant portion of Armenian cinematic heritage.
Film Rights Dispute Leads to Postponement
French company Kissani Films has asserted exclusive rights to approximately 250 Armenian films, referencing a contract allegedly signed in the 1990s. This claim has prompted the Armenian Cinema Fund to temporarily suspend its participation in the Classics section of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
“Given the importance of the issue and the need for a comprehensive study of the legal circumstances that have arisen, it has been decided to temporarily postpone the Armenian program planned for the Classics section of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival,” stated the Armenian Cinema Fund in a press release published on its Facebook page.
Preserving Armenian Cinematic Heritage
The Fund emphasized the critical role of Armenian cinematic heritage as a cornerstone of national memory and cultural identity. Its preservation, popularization, and international representation are among the top priorities for the organization.
“Armenian cinematic heritage is one of the most important components of our national memory and cultural identity, and its preservation, popularization, and international representation are among the priorities of the Armenian Cinema Fund,” the statement continued.
Comprehensive Investigation Underway
In response to the unfolding situation, a comprehensive investigation will be conducted, involving relevant professional and competent bodies. The goal is to thoroughly examine the legal intricacies surrounding the claims made by Kissani Films.
“In connection with the current situation, a comprehensive study will be carried out, involving relevant professional and competent bodies. Based on the results of the study, the necessary steps will be taken, guided by the legislation of the Republic of Armenia and the principles of preserving Armenian cinematic heritage and protecting state interests,” the Fund’s statement concluded.
The outcome of this investigation will determine the future course of action and the potential for the Armenian program to proceed at a later date. The Fund remains committed to safeguarding and promoting Armenian cinema on the global stage.
