Byurakan Observatory: A Beacon of Armenian Scientific Achievement

Yerevan, June 20, 2026 – The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, a cornerstone of Armenian scientific endeavor, was the focal point of a significant cultural diplomacy event held yesterday, June 19, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia in collaboration with the observatory, the event commemorated two pivotal anniversaries: the 80th year since the observatory’s establishment and the 15th year since the plates of the First Byurakan Survey were inscribed on UNESCO’s esteemed ‘Memory of the World’ Register.

The gathering saw the participation of accredited ambassadors, representatives from international organizations, and diplomats from various nations, underscoring the global recognition of the observatory’s contributions to astronomy and scientific discovery.

Highlighting Armenia’s Astronomical Legacy

Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Davit Karapetyan, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Areg Mikaelyan, Director of the Byurakan Observatory. In his address, Mr. Karapetyan emphasized that these anniversaries not only highlight Armenia’s remarkable achievements in astronomy and scientific exploration but also attest to a legacy that transcends national borders, enriching humanity’s collective knowledge and cultural heritage.

The Secretary-General underscored the Byurakan Observatory’s role as a symbol of Armenian scientific thought and accomplishments. He noted that discoveries made at the observatory from its earliest years transformed our understanding of the universe and made substantial contributions to the development of astronomy.

A Journey Through Scientific Discovery

During the event, guests embarked on a comprehensive tour of the observatory, delving into its rich history, scientific breakthroughs, and ongoing astronomical research. Participants visited the Victor Ambartsumian House-Museum, examined telescopes, and gained insights into the observatory’s operations and observational instruments. The tour also shed light on Armenia’s engagement and initiatives in fostering international scientific cooperation in the field of astronomy.

The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, founded by the renowned astrophysicist Victor Ambartsumian, has been a leading center for astronomical research since its inception. Its contributions include groundbreaking work on non-stationary phenomena in stars and galaxies, which significantly advanced the understanding of cosmic evolution.

The inclusion of the First Byurakan Survey plates in UNESCO’s ‘Memory of the World’ Register further solidifies the observatory’s international standing. This register aims to preserve and promote documentary heritage of universal value, and the survey plates represent a unique and irreplaceable record of astronomical observations.

Future Collaborations and Global Impact

The event served as a testament to Armenia’s commitment to scientific advancement and its active role in global scientific discourse. The presence of numerous international dignitaries highlighted the potential for future collaborations and the continued exchange of knowledge in the pursuit of understanding the cosmos.

The Byurakan Observatory continues to be a vibrant hub for research, attracting scientists and students from around the world. Its legacy of discovery and its dedication to fostering international scientific partnerships ensure its enduring impact on the field of astronomy.
