YEREVAN, August 22 – A significant fire erupted yesterday evening, August 21, at the Yerevan Thermal Power Plant (JSC) located at 3rd Lane, Arin-Berd Street, Yerevan. The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ 112 operational management center received an alert around 20:25. The incident, which led to the burning of approximately 3 hectares of dry grass and a wooden structure, also resulted in six people receiving medical assistance for smoke inhalation.
Immediate Response to the Blaze
Upon receiving the alert, four fire-rescue units from Yerevan, led by Zaven Melkonyan, Deputy Head of the Yerevan Rescue Department, were dispatched to the scene. Before their arrival, employees and security personnel of the power plant had already begun efforts to contain the fire’s spread in the grassy area. Their swift actions, combined with the rapid response of the fire brigades, prevented the blaze from reaching a nearby warehouse storing oils and lubricants, which could have escalated the situation significantly.
In addition to the fire-rescue teams, officers from the Police Guard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs also joined the firefighting efforts. An emergency medical team from Yerevan’s 103 service arrived promptly and remained on standby for several hours. During this time, they provided first aid to approximately six individuals, including several plant employees and firefighters, who experienced health issues due to smoke inhalation. Fortunately, preliminary reports indicate no serious injuries.
Stork Strike Identified as Cause
According to preliminary findings by experts, the fire was caused by a stork that came into contact with high-voltage power lines passing through the area. This contact created an electrical arc, leading to the ignition of dry grass. Firefighters later discovered the charred remains of the stork after extinguishing the fire.
The fire consumed approximately 3 hectares of dry grass, wooden structural elements, and a wooden cabin operated by the power plant. The rapid and coordinated efforts of the plant’s staff, security personnel, and rescue services were crucial in preventing a much larger catastrophe, particularly given the proximity of flammable materials.
Broader Context of Emergency Incidents
This incident is one of several emergency situations reported recently in the region. Related incidents include a large fire in Masis involving approximately 2500 hectares of animal feed, a house fire in Odzun, and a forest fire in northern Greece leading to evacuations. These events underscore the importance of preparedness and rapid response in managing various types of emergencies.
The Yerevan Thermal Power Plant plays a critical role in the city’s energy infrastructure. The quick containment of the fire ensured minimal disruption to operations and prevented potential widespread power outages. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess any long-term impacts on the plant’s operations.
