S&P Global Ratings: Armenian Banking Sector Maintains High Profitability and Stability Amidst Economic Growth
Yerevan, August 25 – The Armenian banking sector remains well-capitalized and maintains high profitability, supported by significant net interest income and stable economic growth, according to a report by S&P Global Ratings. This assessment was part of the agency’s announcement affirming Armenia’s credit ratings.
The report, published on August 24, 2026, highlights that lending in Armenia continues to grow at a confident pace. This growth is primarily fueled by consumer and mortgage lending. However, the agency notes that tightening macro-prudential measures and the gradual cancellation of tax benefits for mortgages have already begun to cool housing demand, particularly in Yerevan.
Resilience Despite Rapid Lending Growth
Despite the rapid growth in lending, which has increased the private sector’s debt burden, the associated risks are considered manageable at this stage. This is attributed to robust capital buffers within banks, stable asset quality, and the expectation that profitability will remain high, gradually normalizing from recent peak indicators.
S&P Global Ratings also pointed out that the gradual de-dollarization of bank balance sheets has further reduced foreign exchange risks, contributing to the overall stability of the sector.
Geopolitical Uncertainty Remains a Key Risk
The primary risk for the banking sector, as noted by S&P Global Ratings, continues to be the persistent geopolitical uncertainty in the region. This factor introduces an element of unpredictability that could potentially impact the sector’s long-term outlook, despite its current strong performance.
