YEREVAN, Armenia – Hrachya Gasparyan, the esteemed former rector of the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinema, a distinguished professor, and People’s Artist of Armenia, has passed away at the age of 81. The news was confirmed by the press service of the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinema.
A Life Dedicated to Art and Education
The Institute expressed profound condolences to Gasparyan’s family, relatives, and colleagues, emphasizing his invaluable impact on the development of artistic education and Armenian theater. “Through his many years of pedagogical and creative work, Gasparyan left a significant mark on the lives of many generations, sharing his knowledge, high professional skills, and human warmth. He dedicated his entire life to art,” the statement read.
Gasparyan’s legacy, creative heritage, and the values he instilled in his students are expected to endure for many years, preserving the memory of the great master. “Gasparyan’s achievements and memory will forever remain in the hearts of his colleagues, students, art lovers, and all who knew him,” the Yerevan State Institute further stressed.
Hrachya Gasparyan: A Remarkable Career
Born on January 13, 1946, in Alaverdi, Gasparyan graduated from the Yerevan State Institute of Fine Arts in 1972. His career in theater began shortly after, working at the Leninakan Drama Theater from 1972 to 1974.
From 1974 to 1992, he served as a director at the K. Stanislavsky Yerevan State Russian Drama Theater. In 1992, Gasparyan transitioned to the S. Serjan Yerevan State National Theater as a director, eventually becoming its chief director in 1993.
His commitment to education was equally profound. Since 1976, he taught at the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinema. In 1998, he was appointed pro-rector of the Yerevan State Institute, and from 2006 to 2011, he held the prestigious position of rector of the Drama Institute. Throughout his career, he also directed performances at the Odessa Drama Theater and the Yerevan Puppet Theater.
Hrachya Gasparyan’s passing marks the end of an era for Armenian theater and education, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of artists and educators.
