Yerevan, October 1, 2026 – The Central Bank of Armenia (CBA) has announced the results of the “Armenia Climate Risk Maps” program, a collaborative effort with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The initiative seeks to establish a standardized, data-driven, and practical framework for evaluating physical climate risks across Armenia. The presentation took place yesterday, according to a CBA statement.

Key Figures Address Climate Risk Challenges

The event was opened by Lyaziza Sabirova, Director of the ADB Armenia Permanent Mission, and Artak Manukyan, Member of the CBA Board. In his address, Artak Manukyan emphasized that climate risks are increasingly transforming into economic risks, becoming tangible and measurable within the country’s reality rather than remaining abstract concepts.

Manukyan highlighted that the newly introduced maps enable the utilization of data not only for credit decisions but also for developing preventive, social, and financial programs. He further stressed that public administration bodies can integrate this data into their decision-making processes to assess and mitigate future risks effectively.

ADB’s Continued Support for Financial Resilience

Lyaziza Sabirova, Director of the ADB Armenia Permanent Mission, stated, “Climate risks significantly impact the economy and financial system. This tool will help better assess these risks and make decisions based on clear and reliable data. The ADB will continue to support Armenia in strengthening the financial system’s resilience and developing effective responses to climate risks.”

Comprehensive Tool for Risk Assessment and Planning

The developed maps allow for the assessment of the impact of climate hazards on various settlements and regions, providing an informational foundation for risk management, state and regional planning, investment decisions, and enhancing climate resilience.

Ashot Petrosyan, Head of the Financial System Center at the Central Bank, and Marine Nikoghosyan, ADB representative, presented the main results of the program. They also detailed the methodology used for map development, as well as the data and sources utilized.

“This tool, developed with ADB’s technical assistance, brings together data on climate and water risks on a single platform, helping to better assess risks and make more informed decisions,” noted Marine Nikoghosyan, Program Officer at the ADB Armenia Permanent Mission.

Open Discussion and Future Implications

The event concluded with an open discussion involving representatives from state bodies, the financial sector, international organizations, and the media.

The “Armenia Climate Risk Maps” program is a crucial step towards integrating climate considerations into Armenia’s economic and financial planning, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable future for the country.
