Yerevan, July 29 – The Center of Hydrometeorology and Monitoring has released its report on the atmospheric air quality in Yerevan for the period of July 22-28, 2026. The data indicates that concentrations of certain pollutants exceeded the maximum permissible limits in various districts of the capital.

Dust Concentrations Exceed Permissible Limits

Dust content in the atmospheric air was found to be above the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) in several areas:

  • Kentron District: Throughout the entire week (July 22-28).
  • Arabkir District: On July 22 and July 28.
  • Shengavit District: Did not exceed the limit.
  • Nor Nork District: Did not exceed the limit.

The consistent exceedance of dust levels in the city center, Kentron, raises concerns about the potential impact on public health and calls for further investigation into the sources of pollution.

Nitrogen Dioxide Levels

Nitrogen dioxide concentrations also surpassed the maximum permissible limits in one of Yerevan’s central districts:

  • Kentron District: On July 22.
  • Nor Nork, Arabkir, and Shengavit Districts: Did not exceed the limit.

While the exceedance for nitrogen dioxide was limited to a single day in Kentron, it highlights the fluctuating nature of air quality and the need for continuous monitoring.

Sulfur Dioxide Levels Within Norms

The report noted that sulfur dioxide content in the atmospheric air did not exceed the maximum permissible concentration in any of the monitored districts during the specified period. This indicates that sulfur dioxide pollution is currently not a major concern for Yerevan’s air quality.

Context and Implications

The monitoring results provide crucial insights into the current state of atmospheric air quality in Yerevan. Elevated levels of dust and, at times, nitrogen dioxide, can have various health implications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Long-term exposure to particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide can contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

The data from the Center of Hydrometeorology and Monitoring is essential for policymakers and environmental agencies to develop targeted strategies for air pollution control and mitigation. Understanding the specific pollutants and affected areas allows for more effective interventions, such as regulating industrial emissions, controlling vehicle exhaust, and promoting green infrastructure.

Further analysis of the sources of these pollutants, whether from traffic, construction, or other industrial activities, will be critical in formulating comprehensive action plans to improve air quality in the Armenian capital.

This report underscores the importance of ongoing environmental monitoring and public awareness campaigns to ensure a healthier urban environment for Yerevan residents.
