YEREVAN, June 12 – A bridge on the Yerevan-Sevan highway, in the vicinity of Charentsavan, collapsed yesterday evening following a lightning strike. The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Rescue Service confirmed that there were no casualties, although three vehicles sustained damage.
Emergency Response Initiated After 7 PM
The alarm was received by the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ operational control center at 7:26 PM on June 11. Rescue Service and Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. According to preliminary data, three cars were damaged as a result of the collapse. Emergency services and police personnel are currently working at the site.
Traffic Rerouted to Counter-Flow Lane
Traffic on the affected section of the highway has been rerouted to the opposite lane, operating in a single-lane counter-flow system to manage the flow of vehicles. This measure aims to minimize disruption while ensuring the safety of commuters and allowing emergency crews to continue their work.
Investigation Underway to Assess Full Extent of Damage
Authorities have initiated an investigation to fully assess the damage to the bridge and the surrounding infrastructure. Engineers will be deployed to determine the structural integrity of the remaining sections and to plan the necessary repairs or reconstruction. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has not yet provided a timeline for the full restoration of normal traffic flow on the highway.
Local Residents Advised to Seek Alternative Routes
Local residents and commuters are advised to seek alternative routes if possible, or to expect significant delays when traveling on the Yerevan-Sevan highway. Further updates regarding the situation and traffic arrangements will be provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and local authorities as the situation develops.
