Yerevan, Armenia – The Delegation of the European Union to Armenia has announced the successful completion of a major project aimed at improving Yerevan’s water supply. On May 7, EU representatives participated in an event in the Haghtanak district, marking the successful conclusion of the large-scale water infrastructure project co-financed by the EU and its financial institutions.
Extensive Infrastructure Upgrades
The extensive works involved the rehabilitation and/or construction of over 200 km of water pipelines, the improvement and/or installation of approximately 19,000 household connections, and the renovation of pumping stations. These significant upgrades are set to transform the daily lives of Yerevan residents.
Tangible Benefits for Residents
As a direct result of the project, residents now benefit from a 24-hour water supply, a substantial improvement from previous intermittent access. Furthermore, the initiative has led to a significant reduction in water losses, indicating a more efficient and sustainable water management system for the city.
Substantial Financial Investment
The total investment in this critical infrastructure project amounted to approximately €16.1 million. This substantial funding package included loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) totaling $7 million USD, and additional loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) also amounting to $7 million USD. A crucial grant of €5.5 million was provided by the EU Neighbourhood Investment Platform, underscoring the EU’s commitment to regional development.
