EU-funded project launched in Armenia to strengthen civil society

Yerevan, July 3, 2026 – The “Resilient, Influential and Inclusive Civil Society” (RIICS) project, aimed at strengthening civil society in Armenia, was officially launched on June 22 in Yerevan. The event introduced 36 sub-grantee organizations already selected through an open competition, as well as the main operational directions of the program.

The project seeks to reinforce the role of civil society in Armenia as a resilient, independent, and reliable factor in democratic governance, policy development, and community empowerment. This initiative is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Democracy Development Foundation (DDF), the “People in Need” public organization, and the “Bun” scientific-cultural foundation.

Project Goals and Beneficiaries

The RIICS project is designed to enhance the capacity and influence of civil society organizations (CSOs) across various sectors in Armenia. By providing financial and technical support, the program aims to foster a more vibrant and engaged civil society that can effectively contribute to the country’s democratic processes and socio-economic development. The 36 selected sub-grantee organizations represent a diverse range of interests and expertise, ensuring a broad impact across Armenian society.

Strengthening Democratic Governance

A key objective of the RIICS project is to empower CSOs to play a more active role in democratic governance. This includes supporting their participation in policy-making, monitoring government activities, and advocating for the rights and needs of citizens. The project emphasizes building the capacity of CSOs to engage in constructive dialogue with state institutions, thereby promoting transparency and accountability.

Community Empowerment and Development

The program also focuses on strengthening civil society’s role in community empowerment. This involves supporting initiatives that address local challenges, promote social inclusion, and enhance the well-being of communities throughout Armenia. By fostering independent and reliable CSOs, the project aims to create sustainable solutions for community development and resilience.

Implementation Partners

The RIICS project is a collaborative effort involving several key partners. The Democracy Development Foundation (DDF) brings expertise in promoting democratic values and practices. The “People in Need” public organization contributes its experience in humanitarian aid and development, while the “Bun” scientific-cultural foundation focuses on cultural preservation and scientific advancement. This multi-faceted partnership ensures a comprehensive approach to civil society strengthening.

Future Outlook

The launch of the RIICS project marks a significant step towards reinforcing civil society in Armenia. By investing in the capacity and influence of CSOs, the European Union and its partners aim to contribute to a more democratic, inclusive, and prosperous future for the country. The project is expected to have a lasting impact on civil society engagement, fostering a more active and empowered citizenry.
