Explosion and Fire at Nubarashen Landfill: Two Injured
Yerevan, April 19 – An explosion followed by a fire took place at the Nubarashen landfill in Yerevan yesterday, April 18, 2026, around 6:00 PM. Two individuals, including the landfill’s director and an employee, sustained burn injuries and were hospitalized. One of the victims is reported to be in extremely critical condition.
The incident was reported to the Nubarashen department of the General Department of Community Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia. Photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, reporting from the scene, confirmed the operational information received by the police was accurate.
Victims Identified
The injured have been identified as 36-year-old Sargis Khachatryan, the director of the landfill, and 54-year-old Edik Misakyan, an employee. Mr. Khachatryan was transported to the National Burn Center, while Mr. Misakyan was taken to another specialized hospital in Yerevan. The director is currently in extremely critical condition.
Preliminary Cause of the Explosion
According to preliminary information, the explosion occurred when a light was switched on in a restroom located near the landfill’s guard post. The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation by the relevant authorities.

Emergency services, including police and medical personnel, promptly responded to the scene to manage the situation and provide assistance to the victims. The Nubarashen landfill is registered under the balance sheet of the Yerevan Municipality.
