Gyumri Deputy Mayor Prioritizes City, Declines Parliamentary Mandate

Gyumri, July 22 – Avetik Arakelyan, the Deputy Mayor of Gyumri and the eighth candidate on the “Strong Armenia” alliance’s list, announced today, Wednesday, his decision to decline a parliamentary mandate. Arakelyan stated that his decision came after discussions with both Vardan Ghukasyan and Narek Karapetyan, the leader of the “Strong Armenia” political team faction.

“I had discussions with both Vardan Ghukasyan and Narek Karapetyan, the leader of the political team faction. And the final decision was unequivocally mine. I found that the priority is the interests of Gyumri residents and Gyumri,” Arakelyan declared during a press briefing.

Avoiding a “Possible Collapse” in City Governance

The Deputy Mayor added that another reason for his decision was to “avoid a possible collapse” in the city’s governance. Arakelyan denied any behind-the-scenes agreements with the authorities or any connection between his decision and the recent change in Vardan Ghukasyan’s pre-trial detention from prison to house arrest.

Although Vardan Ghukasyan’s restrictive measure was recently changed to house arrest, he cannot return to his mayoral duties under the current restrictions. Since Ghukasyan’s arrest on corruption charges last October, Arakelyan, who is also Ghukasyan’s son-in-law, has been effectively performing the duties of the Mayor of Gyumri.

Background of the “Strong Armenia” Alliance

The “Strong Armenia” alliance is a political force that has been active in the region. Their candidate list for the parliamentary elections included prominent figures like Vardan Ghukasyan and Narek Karapetyan. Arakelyan’s decision to forgo his mandate highlights the complexities of local politics and the challenges faced by officials balancing regional and national responsibilities.

Implications for Gyumri’s Future

Arakelyan’s continued tenure as Deputy Mayor means he will remain at the forefront of Gyumri’s administration. This decision is expected to provide stability in the city’s governance, a crucial factor given the ongoing legal situation surrounding Mayor Ghukasyan. The focus will now be on how Arakelyan and the city administration will address the city’s needs and challenges without the added responsibility of a parliamentary role.

Public Reaction and Future Outlook

The public’s reaction to Arakelyan’s decision is yet to be fully gauged, but his emphasis on prioritizing Gyumri’s interests is likely to resonate with local residents. The political landscape in Shirak Province, and particularly in Gyumri, remains dynamic, with various factors influencing governance and public sentiment. This decision by the Deputy Mayor is a significant development that will likely shape the immediate future of the city’s leadership and political direction.

The “Strong Armenia” alliance will need to consider the implications of Arakelyan’s choice on their overall political strategy and representation in parliament. The focus now shifts to the ongoing legal proceedings involving Vardan Ghukasyan and how these will ultimately impact the political future of Gyumri.

The upcoming period will be critical for Gyumri as its leadership navigates these challenges and works towards ensuring the city’s continued development and stability.
