Major Renovation for Gyumri Polyclinic No. 2: Government Allocates AMD 1.45 Billion
Gyumri, Shirak Province, Armenia, April 21, 2026 – A significant phase of healthcare infrastructure modernization is commencing in Shirak Province, with the major renovation of Gyumri N.A. Melikyan Polyclinic No. 2. The Armenian government has allocated 1.45 billion drams (approximately $3.7 million USD) from the state budget for this project. The polyclinic, constructed in the 1930s, serves a population of 24,000 residents and has been included in the government’s healthcare institution modernization program.
Project Details and Commencement
Design works for the renovation have been completed, and the tender for the contractor has been concluded. The commencement of the construction work is expected in the near future, following the announcement of the selected contractor. Given that the Gyumri Ambulance Station and the Blood Bank also operate within the same building, officials are considering the former “Samariter” hospital premises, which is currently undergoing renovation, to ensure proper conditions for the relocated medical institutions.
Part of a Broader Modernization Program
According to the Shirak Province Governor’s office, these efforts are part of the Armenian government’s 2021-2026 activity program. Healthcare reforms in Shirak Province are ongoing, with construction work currently underway at the Artik Multidisciplinary Medical Center. Additionally, new standard buildings are being constructed for the Akhurik Medical Outpatient Clinic and the Pemzashen Health Center, both of which are scheduled to be commissioned this year.
Impact on Healthcare Services
The renovation of Polyclinic No. 2 is expected to significantly improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare services for the 24,000 residents it serves. Modernized facilities and equipment will contribute to better patient care and a more efficient working environment for medical staff. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the healthcare sector across the regions of Armenia.
Context of Regional Development
This project is one of several development initiatives in Shirak Province. Other ongoing projects include unprecedented volumes of subvention programs across all settlements in the province, road patching works in Gyumri, and an increase in winter crop sown areas. The region has also seen the commissioning of a renovated water supply system in Kaps and the continuation of the “Special Property Library” serving children with disabilities in Shirak Province. These combined efforts aim to foster comprehensive development and improve living standards for the local population.
The modernization of healthcare infrastructure is a crucial component of Armenia’s broader development strategy, aiming to provide high-quality medical services to all citizens, regardless of their location. The investment in Gyumri Polyclinic No. 2 is a testament to this commitment, promising a healthier future for the residents of Shirak Province.
