Mass Poisoning in Gyumri: 15 Children Hospitalized with Acute Intestinal Infection

Gyumri, May 16 – Fifteen children from the “Mother of Armenia” center in Gyumri, Shirak Province, were hospitalized yesterday, May 15, 2026, with symptoms of an acute intestinal infection. The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Armenia reported the outbreak, stating that all affected children are currently receiving treatment in the infectious diseases department of the Gyumri Medical Center.

Condition of Patients and Ongoing Investigations

According to medical reports, the condition of the hospitalized children is stable, and they are showing positive dynamics in their recovery. As of today, no new cases of infection have been registered. Specialists from the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention immediately launched an epidemiological investigation following the incident. This included extensive sampling and laboratory tests to determine the source and cause of the mass poisoning.

Drinking Water Cleared, Biological Samples Under Analysis

Initial investigations focused on the drinking water supply, which was a primary suspect. However, tests of the drinking water did not reveal any deviations from established safety standards, effectively ruling it out as the cause of the outbreak. The analysis of biological samples collected from the affected individuals is still ongoing. Authorities anticipate that additional information regarding the cause of the infection will be provided once these comprehensive laboratory tests are completed and conclusive results are obtained.

The incident has prompted a thorough review of hygiene and sanitation protocols at the “Mother of Armenia” center to prevent future occurrences. Local health officials are working closely with the center’s administration to ensure all necessary measures are in place to safeguard the health and well-being of the children.
