Matviyenko: Armenia’s EU Membership Path is ‘Destructive’

Yerevan, August 6 – Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Russian Federation Council, has stated that Moscow regards Armenia’s ambition to join the European Union as an unfavorable and even ‘destructive’ direction for the republic. This statement comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding Armenia’s foreign policy choices.

According to RIA Novosti, Matviyenko emphasized that this pertains to Yerevan’s foreign policy choice, underscoring that the Russian side views the European integration process negatively and does not consider it to be in Armenia’s interests.

Earlier, it was reported that Ruben Rubinyan, Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, had a telephone conversation with Valentina Matviyenko. According to the press service of the Armenian National Assembly, the parties discussed the agenda of Armenian-Russian inter-parliamentary cooperation, highlighted the continuity of dialogue, and touched upon a number of current issues in bilateral relations.

Moscow’s Concerns Over Yerevan’s European Integration

Matviyenko’s strong remarks highlight Russia’s clear disapproval of Armenia’s potential shift towards closer ties with the European Union. This stance is consistent with Moscow’s broader foreign policy, which often views the expansion of Western influence in post-Soviet states as a threat to its own geopolitical interests.

The Russian Federation Council Speaker’s comments suggest that Moscow is closely monitoring Yerevan’s foreign policy trajectory and is prepared to voice its concerns over any moves that could be perceived as distancing Armenia from its traditional ally, Russia.

Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue Amidst Geopolitical Shifts

The recent phone conversation between Rubinyan and Matviyenko indicates that despite the differing views on Armenia’s EU aspirations, channels of communication between the two countries remain open. The discussion focused on inter-parliamentary cooperation and bilateral relations, suggesting an effort to manage potential tensions through dialogue.

However, Matviyenko’s public statement following the call signals that these discussions have not alleviated Russia’s fundamental concerns regarding Armenia’s European integration path. The use of the term ‘destructive’ underscores the gravity with which Moscow views this potential shift.

Implications for Armenia’s Foreign Policy

Armenia’s foreign policy has historically been characterized by a multi-vector approach, balancing relations with Russia, the European Union, and other international actors. However, recent geopolitical developments and internal political dynamics have led to increased discussions about the country’s future orientation.

Moscow’s explicit warning could have significant implications for Armenia’s decision-making process. It highlights the delicate balance Yerevan must maintain between pursuing its sovereign foreign policy objectives and managing its long-standing strategic partnership with Russia.

The coming months are likely to see continued diplomatic activity as Armenia navigates these complex geopolitical currents, with both Russia and the European Union vying for influence in the South Caucasus region.
