Russia Sends Protest Note to Armenia Over Gyumri Monument Vandalism

Gyumri, Shirak Province, Armenia, June 19 – Russia has formally expressed its strong disapproval to Armenia following an act of vandalism against the ‘Mother Armenia’ monument in Gyumri, dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. The incident, which took place on June 10, has sparked outrage in Moscow, with the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official representative, Maria Zakharova, describing it as more than mere hooliganism.

A Deliberate Attack on Historical Memory

During a briefing held on June 18, Zakharova stated, “A terrible incident occurred in Gyumri – the desecration of the ‘Mother Armenia’ monument to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. On June 10, information about this desecration spread, and it naturally causes deep indignation. This sacrilegious act is not just hooliganism, but a targeted attack aimed at shared historical memory, and an attempt to desecrate the great victory. Of course, we sent a protest note to the Armenian side.”

The monument, a significant symbol of shared history and sacrifice, was reportedly defaced, prompting immediate condemnation from Russian authorities. The Russian 102nd military base personnel in Armenia promptly joined efforts to restore the monument, demonstrating Russia’s commitment to preserving such historical sites.

Armenian Authorities’ Response and Moscow’s Concerns

Zakharova commended the Armenian competent authorities for their swift action in apprehending the alleged perpetrator, expressing confidence that justice would prevail. However, she voiced bewilderment regarding the Armenian authorities’ overall conduct, suggesting a pattern of silence rather than a clear assessment of such incidents, which she termed a “bad tradition.”

Furthermore, Zakharova emphasized that such permissiveness, coupled with what she described as an “unbridled anti-Russian campaign” accompanying the parliamentary elections in Armenia in June, has created fertile ground for such actions. “Moreover, we have noticed attempts by some information resources associated with the Armenian authorities to present the incident as a deliberate provocation by the Russian side. You know, you can invent anything, but that’s not true. This is a lie – insidious and obvious, invented along the way. All this is beyond common sense,” she added.

Historical Memory and EU Rapprochement

The Russian diplomat underscored that experience shows that for countries seeking rapprochement with the EU, one of the key conditions is the struggle against shared historical memory. This statement suggests a broader geopolitical context to Russia’s concerns, linking the incident to Armenia’s foreign policy orientations.

The incident in Gyumri highlights the delicate balance of historical narratives and political allegiances in the region, particularly concerning monuments that symbolize shared Soviet-era heritage. The prompt restoration efforts by Russian military personnel and the diplomatic note from Moscow underscore the importance Russia places on the preservation of these historical symbols and the memory they represent.

The Armenian government has yet to issue a comprehensive official statement in response to Russia’s protest note, beyond the initial report of the alleged perpetrator’s arrest. The ongoing dialogue between the two nations is expected to address these concerns and reinforce the need for mutual respect for historical and cultural heritage.
