Uncertainty and Unease Grip Gyumri: Political Tensions Escalate

Gyumri, Shirak Province, Armenia – An atmosphere of uncertainty and unease prevails in Gyumri as political tensions between the central government and local authorities continue to escalate. While the ruling power, led by Pashinyan, is engaged in a life-and-death struggle to “usurp” Gyumri, the chasm between local authorities and their partners is widening, according to “Hraparak” newspaper.

Deepening Rift in Local Government

Sources indicate that Avetis Arakelyan, the son-in-law of the arrested Vardan Ghukasyan and current acting mayor (first deputy mayor), has not yet informed his partner political parties whether he intends to go to parliament or continue his work as deputy mayor. This lack of clarity is causing significant friction among the local political factions.

Partners are reportedly offended by this treatment, especially since it is unclear who will replace Arakelyan if he resigns. It is rumored that there is no one in Ghukasyan’s team capable of holding the position and being acceptable to the opposition. Furthermore, Karen Simonyan, the leader of the “Mother Armenia” faction, could be neutralized through criminal proceedings at an opportune moment.

Ruling Party’s Strategy and Potential Snap Elections

The ruling power reportedly hopes that after Arakelyan’s departure, no replacement will be elected, and an acting mayor will be appointed. This strategy seems to be a response to the apparent failure of their plan to dissolve the council and call for snap elections by disrupting meetings. If this plan fails, there are discussions about potentially enlarging Gyumri by annexing a new community to force new elections.

Recent Incidents and Concerns in Gyumri

The political instability coincides with other local concerns. The Gyumri City Hall recently warned that entering fountains during Vardavar (a traditional Armenian festival) is unsafe due to the risk of electrocution. Additionally, there have been reports of vandalism in Gyumri, including broken windows at “Geghtson’s Clock” and golden letters being torn off the “Mother Armenia” memorial complex and thrown into the trash.

These incidents highlight a period of heightened tension and uncertainty in the city, with both political maneuvering and public safety issues at the forefront.

Gagik Tsarukyan’s Indictment and Related Developments

In a related development, Gagik Tsarukyan does not accept the charges against him. The decision to initiate criminal prosecution against him was made today without overcoming his immunity. This adds another layer of complexity to the broader political landscape in Armenia, with high-profile legal cases unfolding alongside local political struggles.

The situation in Gyumri remains fluid, with ongoing political discussions and potential shifts in local governance. The coming weeks are expected to bring more clarity regarding the future leadership and administrative structure of the city.
